Renting a Car in Exuma: What to Ask Before Booking

Decide whether you need a car on Great Exuma, compare complete rental quotes and prepare for pickup, beach-road restrictions and the return inspection.

Quick answer

A rental car can suit trips with several Great Exuma and Little Exuma road stops. Compare the full quote, vehicle capacity, permitted roads, deposit, damage terms and pickup arrangements; use transfers when your plans are concentrated at one property or involve boat-only islands.

The right question is not simply whether every Exuma visitor needs a car. Ask how many road journeys your own trip requires. Write down the accommodation, groceries, restaurant plans and excursion meeting points. A car can be useful when those are spread out; it may be unnecessary for a stay concentrated at one property with arranged transfers.

Separate road journeys from boat journeys

A car can help you explore Great Exuma and bridge-connected Little Exuma. It does not solve transport to Stocking Island or the outer cays. If you stay on another cay, first confirm how you reach that accommodation and what transport is useful there. Avoid booking a week of Great Exuma car hire simply because your flight search uses “Exuma” as a destination.

Request comparable quotes

Send each rental company the same pickup and return dates, times, location, passenger count and luggage estimate. Ask for the total rather than comparing a headline daily rate. The quote should make clear which charges are included and which are optional or payable at pickup. Keep the written response with your booking record.

These details vary by provider and vehicle. For example, Thompson's published terms distinguish deposits and deductibles by vehicle class and list exclusions. Do not assume the terms for one displayed car apply to a different class or another company. Ask the provider to confirm the terms for your actual reservation.

Check driver eligibility early

Local operators publish their own age, licence and payment requirements. Confirm every proposed driver's eligibility before paying, particularly if the main cardholder and driver differ. If you rely on separate coverage, ask the relevant provider to confirm whether it applies to this rental and what documentation is needed. A general travel article cannot settle a specific coverage question.

At pickup, spend time before driving away

Inspect the vehicle with the representative. Record existing damage, the fuel level and any issues with tires, lights, locks or controls. Check the luggage fits without obstructing the driver's view. Ask how to reach the company if the car will not start, a tire is damaged or your return flight changes. Get any unresolved condition noted in writing.

The Bahamas drives on the left. Settle into the car's controls while parked and take an unhurried approach to turns and junctions. Follow local signs and conditions. Do not assume that a quiet road is free of pedestrians, animals or uneven surfaces, and stop somewhere suitable before checking directions.

Beach access is a separate question

Ask specifically about the road to a beach you plan to visit. Vehicle height alone does not grant permission to use a track, and a road shown on a map may not be a public entrance. If a route looks unsuitable, turn back safely and ask for advice. Our Little Exuma road-trip plan keeps extra stops optional for this reason.

Plan one stretch of road at a time

From the George Town area, separate a northbound Great Exuma outing from a drive over the bridge to Little Exuma. Choose one anchor stop and one nearby backup for each. Before leaving, decide where to refuel, where to eat, and when to turn back. Confirm that your agreement covers the approach road to your main stop.

Make the return predictable

Confirm where to refuel, where to meet the representative and what happens outside office hours. Leave time for a return inspection and keep the receipt. If driving is likely to add stress rather than flexibility, compare arranged transfers using the same list of journeys. The best transport choice is the one that fits your actual week.
