The most important travel-planning decision is not which airline to take. It is which part of the Exumas you are actually staying in. The islands and cays do not share one road network or one practical arrival plan.

For a stay on Great Exuma or bridge-connected Little Exuma, most travelers should fly into Exuma International Airport (GGT). For Staniel Cay and some central-cay stays, Staniel Cay Airport (TYM) or a property-arranged boat or charter connection may be more practical. Confirm the final island and transfer with your lodging before buying a nonrefundable flight.

Start with the right part of Exuma

“Exuma” describes an island chain, not a single compact island. Great Exuma contains George Town and the main international airport. Little Exuma is connected to Great Exuma by bridge, so the two islands share a drivable road network. Stocking Island sits across Elizabeth Harbour from George Town and requires a boat transfer. Farther north, Staniel Cay and the other Exuma Cays are reached by air or water.

This is why a vacation rental described as “in Exuma” can still be many hours—or an extra flight and boat ride—away from another Exuma attraction. Check the island name, airport code and final transfer before comparing fares.

Flying to Great Exuma and Little Exuma

Use airport code GGT when your lodging is on Great Exuma or Little Exuma. The official Bahamas destination guide identifies Exuma International Airport as the primary gateway to the Exumas and notes that Little Exuma is connected to Great Exuma by bridge.

Some travelers can book a direct international flight to GGT, while others connect through Nassau (NAS) or a U.S. gateway. Routes and operating days change by season, so use the official Bahamas flight directory to discover possible carriers, compare common departure routes in the GGT flight-route widgets, then verify the exact date and flight on the airline's own website before paying.

Direct flight or Nassau connection?

A direct GGT flight reduces the number of moving parts. A connection through Nassau can offer more itinerary choices, but it adds another check-in, possible baggage handling and weather or schedule exposure. Compare the complete journey—not only the first ticket price.

If the domestic segment is on a separate reservation, allow a conservative connection buffer and understand what happens if the inbound flight is late. The last flight of the day leaves less room for recovery than an earlier connection.

Flying to Staniel Cay and the central Exuma Cays

Use airport code TYM only when it matches your final destination. The official Bahamas guide identifies Staniel Cay Airport as a Port of Entry in the Exuma Cays. Staniel Cay is not connected by road to Great Exuma, so landing at GGT does not put you a taxi ride away from a Staniel Cay hotel.

For Staniel Cay or another cay, ask the property for its recommended arrival plan before booking the long international leg. The right answer may be a scheduled or charter flight, a boat transfer from a nearby cay, or a coordinated combination. Transfer options can be weather-dependent and baggage limits may be different on smaller aircraft.

Can you take a ferry or mailboat to Exuma?

Sea service can exist between Nassau and parts of the Exumas, but it should not be treated as a frequent commuter ferry without checking the current operator schedule. Routes, sailing days, passenger availability and arrival points can change, and a cargo-oriented mailboat is a very different trip from a fast passenger ferry.

Before building a vacation around a sea connection, verify all of the following directly with the operator:

• The exact departure and arrival ports—not simply “Nassau” and “Exuma”
• Whether passengers are accepted on your date
• Total travel time and check-in deadline
• Baggage rules and weather cancellation policy
• How you will reach your lodging after the boat arrives

For a short holiday, flying is usually easier to plan. A sea route can make sense when the schedule, experience and arrival point fit the trip rather than merely appearing cheaper.

Decide in advance whether you will rent a car, use a taxi or receive a property transfer. Travelers who want to explore multiple beaches, restaurants and settlements usually value having a car. Stocking Island

Plan both pieces: GGT to the George Town waterfront, then the water transfer. Do not assume the public water taxi schedule will match a late flight or large luggage load. Ask your lodging which dock to use and whether it arranges guest transfers.

Staniel Cay and other cays

Use the transfer instructions supplied by the property or local operator. On a cay, a short distance on a map can still require a boat, and wind or sea conditions can affect timing.

1. Pin the exact lodging. Record the island or cay, not only the property name.
2. Ask for the preferred airport. Confirm GGT, TYM or another property-specific plan in writing.
3. Confirm the final transfer. Include pickup point, contact number, baggage and late-arrival procedure.
4. Compare complete routes. Count separate tickets, overnight stops, baggage rules and transfer costs.
5. Verify time-sensitive details at the source. Airline and boat schedules can change after an article is published.
6. Keep the first evening simple. Avoid placing a nonrefundable boat tour immediately after a complicated arrival.
